Erica Johnson – Spring 2022

Chronic Wasting Disease in New York State Public Policy Proposal by Erica Johnson.

As a Ph.D. candidate in Biology seeking to transition to a career in policymaking, Erica decided to draft a public policy proposal aiming to increase Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance among wild cervids in New York State for her YVoS outreach project.

Using skills and experience gained through the YVoS program, Erica recently applied for a policy fellowship with the NY State Assembly, using her outreach project as a professional asset and example of a well prepared and effect policy proposal.

Through YVoS I was able to learn many valuable skills that helped me draft my policy proposal, ranging from how to craft a compelling narrative by connecting with your audience to how to appeal and communicate effectively with policymakers. I plan to use this proposal as part of my application to New York State Assembly’s Graduate Internship which provides participants the opportunity to work alongside Assembly leaders and committees to conduct legislative research and policy analysis.
