Katherine Morin – Spring 2022

The Secret of Social Media by Katherine Morin.

Three years ago, Katherine created a successful Instagram science communication blog, where she creates and posts various types of content including long and short videos, static posts and blog posts, all with the aim of promoting increased science accessibility.

Based on her experience with using social media as an outreach platform, Kathrine shared her insights into using Instagram to increase accessibility to the sciences, and wrote an op-ed for her outreach project about how we as science communicators can use social media to improve access to science education. Her draft op-ed is still in the works and is being reviewed and prepared for submission to a publication platform.

Katherine spoke passionately and inspiringly during our YVoS Spring 2022 Project Showcase, and provided wonderful advice and insight to her fellow YVoS participants. Continue reading to see some inspiring quotes from Katherine!

“In high school, I swore myself off social media because it can be so damaging (to mental health), especially as a teenager, and it is nerve wracking to put yourself out there. I started this page originally because I was the only girl in my science classes, and I wanted to meet more people to talk to about this stuff. But since then, I’ve said to myself, this is something I like talking about. And when you begin to realize the kind of impact it has, and strangers who you don’t know start reaching out to you, it goes to show that even existing in this space means something to people, and to me that’s worth more than any person who may judge you for it.”
