Malia Cafasso – Spring 2026

Malia Cafasso graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. She is currently completing an AmeriCorps term serving as a Community Engagement Coordinator with Norman Bird Sanctuary and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Following her service, she plans to continue working in community engagement and volunteer management, particularly within community science programs. Malia is especially interested in learning how organizations and individuals actively incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into their work.

For her outreach project, Malia created an infographic designed for individuals with little or no prior experience in community science or volunteering. The infographic serves as a simple “cheat sheet,” helping users identify skills they already possess, or skills they would like to develop, and follow a flowchart that connects those interests and strengths to different volunteer roles and community science opportunities. By providing clear examples and ideas for exploring local projects, the infographic aims to make community science more accessible and approachable for beginners. To make the experience even more engaging, the infographic includes a fun quiz that helps participants discover which type of “Eco Icon” they are. Malia hopes to inspire more people to get involved in community science and recognize the valuable contributions they can make to environmental stewardship and conservation efforts.
