Casey Iwamoto (she/her) is a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University where she studies biogeochemistry and soil restoration. Upon starting the YVoS program, she was interested in providing her unique perspective as an Asian American in environmental science. “Throughout my academic career, I have often found that while I can find inspiring women scientists, I struggle to find my ethnic identity represented in science,” she wrote. “Comments ranging from my English being good for an international student, to not being quite Asian enough to attend the international collectives at conferences, I have thought deeply about how I want to build a space for expanding diversity in science to encourage and inspire new generations of scientists.”
Through Casey’s outreach project, she has done just that. In her op-ed for The Xylom, she argues that incorporating Asian American identities into the environmental sciences can add immense value to the field. You can find Casey’s piece HERE!
