Alondra Velazquez – Fall 2024

Alondra Velazquez recieved her Bachelors of Biology and Visual Science Communication from Lake Forest College. During her undergrad, she created visual tools and resources to teach science, including developing teaching materials for biology students and designing ant communication keys for a research lab. Additionally, she self-designed her Visual Science Communication major, conducting independent research and presenting a proposal to gain approval.

Alondra currently works as a Stewardship and Resilience Administrative Assistant for Together for Nature (TFN), an Illinois-based non-profit focused on increasing equitable engagement in environmental work. In her role, she works closely with TFN’s two youth programs, the Mentorship for Sustainability Program and the Beaver Ecology Internship. She is passionate about bridging the gap between science education and the diverse public, and believes her background and life experiences offer unique perspectives that she can contribute to the world of science communication. As a first-generation college student and the eldest child in an immigrant family, she faced numerous barriers in accessing higher education and spaces where she initially felt out of place. Despite these challenges, her perseverance led her to find ways to overcome obstacles, paving the way for others.

For her outreach project, Alondra created an informational flyer on Coastal & Climate Resilience in Northeastern Illinois, aiming to communicate the importance of climate resilience to low-income, marginalized communities impacted by climate change. The flyer featured simple, appealing graphics that conveyed key information quickly, including the causes of climate change, existing community resources, what resilience looks like, and how individuals can contribute to building resilience.

Check out the flyer below and visit Together for Nature to learn more about this incredible environmental non-profit!
