Hydeia Didier is an undergraduate chemistry major at Wellesley College. As someone who exists at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities, Hydeia has long understood the power—and necessity—of clear, authentic communication.
Their goal is to be a voice that makes science more approachable and accessible, especially for those who are often overlooked or unheard. In today’s world, Hydeia deeply values the insight science offers, but they believe that without sharing that knowledge in inclusive ways, it loses its impact.
For their outreach project, Hydeia launched a Substack page titled Hydeism, a space where they challenge the idea that scientists must conform to rigid notions of professionalism. Instead, they advocate for embracing personal quirks and individuality, believing that doing so makes science communication more relatable and human.
Their debut piece, “You Might Walk the Walk, but My Colors POP!”, explores how personal style can be a powerful tool for self-expression, even in traditionally “professional” spaces. Through this lens, Hydeia aims to normalize individuality in science and celebrate diversity in all its forms.
Check out their Substack, Hydeism, to follow along on their journey and learn more about how they’re redefining what it means to be a scientist.
