Interactive Infographic for UBC Oceans Project
Dilan Sunthareswaran (he/him) is a masters student at the University of British Columbia, with a focus on Oceanography. His graduate work focuses on understanding the land-ocean connection in urban settings and investigating the presence and impact of urban material flows into Vancouver’s marine environment.
Beyond his research and studies, Dilan works to give back to his community as a mentor for undergraduates from underrepresented groups and volunteers regularly at local community centers. Dilan is no stranger to adversity and hopes to use his difficult circumstances to not only grow personally but also use his unique experiences as a path to help others grow and succeed.
For his YVoS outreach project, Dilan created an informative and interactive infographic (above) that will be used to inform interested parties and the general public about the Urban Oceans Project, a new research direction from The University of British Columbia aimed at understanding how urban environments interact with oceans, change their character and impact their health. Dilan’s infographic will help raise awareness for the importance of their research, answer questions from interested people as they conduct fieldwork in urban and coastal areas, and inform the general public about how this work impacts public health by showcasing this infographic in community centers throughout the community.
The Urban Oceans Project works in collaboration with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Metro Vancouver, Scholes Lab, Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Dilan included both local and indigenous collaborators on the infographic to stress the importance of working with first nation partners, their deep connection with the environment and the unbelievable efforts already being made to restore the health of the natural world.
