Jada Daniels – Fall 2023

“Science on Tap” Public Community Science Event

Jada Daniels (she/her) is a PhD student at Louisiana State University, with a focus on Community Ecology and Conservation Ecology. Jada’s unique perspective, rooted in her biracial identity and rural upbringing has cultivated a strong personal commitment to democratizing access to science education and aims to make science more accessible and engaging for all, regardless of geographic location, socio-economic status, or racial background. Jada brought a large amount of prior science communication experience to the YVoS program, performing community outreach and scientific communication working as research technician with the US Geological Survey, Georgia DNA and with local landowners while working on her master’s thesis. She also performs outreach with middle school science programs and other universities to help create science kits for children.

For her outreach project, Jada organized a community outreach event called “Science on Tap”, a free event which featured presentations from scientists and research technicians to the public (right). Her event was hosted at Tin Roof Beer, a local brewery, and aimed to increase awareness and accessibility to science, lower barriers into the scientific community and change the way people view science communication, all while making it a fun and enjoyable experience for all in attendance.

The event was a smash hit, boasting more than 70 people in attendance for a wonderful evening of presentations and question and answer sessions. Jada hopes to host another event in the coming months with a new suite of presenters and use what she learned from the YVoS program and her first event to fine tune the details for the another successful second event. See below for some photos and a flier from the community event!
