The Young Voices of Science (YVoS) program kicked off its Fall 2026 session with an engaging workshop on science communication through social media, led by our newest expert presenter, Cate Larsen, known online as The Groovy Geologist. A geologist, educator, podcast host, and experienced science communicator, Cate shared practical strategies for using social media to make science accessible, engaging, and relevant to diverse audiences. Participants explored different content formats, platform-specific strategies, and ways to incorporate humor, collaboration, and audience participation into their outreach. Through hands-on activities, they began developing social media campaigns around hypothetical environmental issues while discussing everything from content creation tools to navigating political topics in science communication. Drawing on her experience connecting science with audiences ranging from kindergarteners to retirees, Cate offered valuable insights, answered participants’ questions, about the effective use of social media in science communication!
