Hennecys Perez Castro – Fall 2022

CO2: “Carbon Emissions Behind Greenwashing” Op-ed and “Comparing Low Cost Sensors with Research Grade Instruments for Measuring CO2 Concentrations and Fluxes” Presentation.

For her outreach project, Hennecys Perez Castro, Environmental Engineering student at Syracuse University (25’) wrote an op-ed about the Carbon Emissions Behind Greenwashing, and how greenwashing can result in excess CO2 emissions added to the atmosphere. The topic of her op-ed was a continuation of her research conducted during the summer of 2022 as part of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest REU program.

Her research focused on comparing low-cost sensors with research-grade instrumentation for measuring CO2 emissions. Hennecys also presented her summer work at the Long Term Ecological Research Networks All Scientists’ meeting in California, where she won a student poster award for her research poster (see below).

Hennecys combined her interests in renewable energy and equity, field research experience, and poster presentation to write this compelling op-ed. Her op-ed has not yet been published, but stay tuned right here for any updates!
