Raven Harrison earned her bachelor’s degree in marine biology and biotechnology and is a member of Minorities in Shark Sciences through their ICONIC Oceans program. She is currently laboratory technician in an endocrinology lab and a presenter and educator at Walt Disney World, where she works in both the zoo and aquarium, engaging guests of diverse backgrounds and ages in conversations about conservation and science. Previously, she served as an exhibit guide at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, where she educated guests about the research conducted at the facility and highlighted the meaningful contributions individuals can make toward ocean conservation in their daily lives.
From a young age, Raven has had a deep passion for the ocean. She has been captivated not only by the incredible diversity of life it supports, but also by its powerful influence on climate and human communities. Raven believes representation is essential in science communication and aims to use her voice not only to communicate science, but also to advocate for inclusive narratives that ensure more people feel welcomed and empowered to contribute.
For her outreach project, Raven focused on community engagement through her social media platform, Black Girls Wild, which included both a social media campaign and an in-person event. Her campaign, Manatee Mondays, shared information about manatee biology and ecology, the threats manatees face, and actions individuals can take to help protect them. She also organized a guided nature walk and bio-blitz at Blue Spring State Park, connecting issues affecting manatees to broader environmental challenges facing local communities.
