Daniel Vera (he/him) is a freshman studying Sustainable Energy Manager at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. With his interests in an interdisciplinary approach, he decided to create Science Quilts to “promote a more broad and engaging view of STEM through conversations with professionals in the science and research field.” As a Latinx from Ecuador, Dan believes “these conversations are especially important in low income, BIPOC and many other underrepresented communities that usually get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to science access and outreach.” Dan knows there is way more to science than the data, and he hopes to amplify diverse voices to broadcast these stories and inspire the youth along the treacherous journey that is STEM.
His first episode, Carnivore Ecology: Rewriting the narrative with Tyus D Williams, aired at the beginning of January, featuring our newest Young Voices of Science Expert Presenter. In this episode, they cover the importance of representation within the scientific community, his insights on addressing scientific wrongs and much more. He is currently working on releasing his second episode with our veteran Expert Presenter: Dr. Chanel Matney.
You can find his podcast on Spotify and follow along his journey on Instagram @ScienceQuilts.
