Ksenija Vučković – Fall 2023

Ksenija Vučković (she/her) is currently pursuing her master’s degree in biology (with a minor in molecular biology and physiology) at the Faculty of Science in Porto, Portugal. Under the mentorship of Dr. Catarina Magalhães and Dr. Irina Gorodetskaya, Ksenjia’s research explores the microbial tracers involved in Antarctica cloud condensation and ice nuclei. Going into the YVoS program, Ksenjia hoped to learn how to effectively communicate her experiences in the world of Antarctic research. “It is important to learn to effectively communicate knowledge with the public,” Ksenjia wrote in her application. “By attending this program, I believe I can further develop my skills on conveying information I obtained during my scientific career.”

Ksenjia more than achieved her goal, successfully pitching a story idea to Undark about the lack of mental health for researchers in Antarctica. Although Ksenjia has not (yet!) traveled to Antarctica, she knows many researchers who can speak to their experience at the research station, and thus contribute to this important and impactful op-ed.  Stay tuned for the link to Ksenjia’s article when it is published!
