Vicente Aránguiz – Fall 2025

Vicente Aránguiz recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences and is currently completing additional requirements for a degree in Biology at the University of Chile.

Coming from Chile, a country with unique freshwater ecosystems and a high degree of endemism, Vicente brings a perspective grounded in biodiversity conservation within underrepresented regions. His interest in ichthyology, particularly the ecology, biogeography, and conservation of native freshwater fishes, offers a valuable lens for addressing broader issues such as climate change and the connections between local communities and their environments. Chilean freshwater fishes represent a little-known and underappreciated group. Although highly threatened, they often lack conservation plans and receive far less recognition than more charismatic species. This gap motivates Vicente to communicate their importance and to connect scientific knowledge with greater awareness of biodiversity that is frequently overlooked in both policy and public discourse.

For his outreach project, Vicente launched an Instagram page called @Diario.Ictiólogo, where he shares content in Spanish about Chilean continental ichthyofauna, focusing on their diversity and the threats they face. Chile has a small but remarkable number of freshwater fish species, many of which are endemic. Unfortunately, most are endangered and lack formal conservation plans. Through his platform, Vicente aims to raise awareness of these species among the general public and inspire others to be as fascinated by them as he is, ultimately promoting their conservation.
