Lacey Sprouse is an undergraduate student at Colorado State University Pueblo, studying Wildlife and Natural Resources. To the YVoS program, Lacey brought her military background and experience in leadership, and her strong interpersonal communication skills to really excel during her time in the YVoS program.
Her background as a Military Police Soldier and Volunteer Hunter Education Instructor with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department allows her to keep an open mind when approaching new and unfamiliar topics and situations, listen to perspectives from all sides of a dispute and look for common ground in decision making and when looking for solutions. All of this experience gives Lacey a solid foundation as a communicator and shines through during her time in YVoS and beyond.
For her outreach project, Lacey hosted a Wildlife Trivia night at a local brewery, OCC Brewing. The event was co-hosted by Lacey and the The Wildlife Society, CSU Pueblo Chapter. The event was well attended, featuring wildlife themed questions from the state and region, and outdoor themed prizes such as a first prize pair of binoculars, along with stickers and other small outdoor-focused prizes collected over time.
Lacey gained valuable experience with planning and hosting a science communication event in her community and distilling scientific information for a general audience, all while supporting a local business, “a win-win”, Lacey says. Check out some photos from the event below, and consider checking out OCC Brewing if you are ever in the vicinity of Colorado State University, Pueblo!
