🎧The Art of Audio Storytelling with Ari Daniel🎧

💻 We had our second Expert Presenter Workshop this month with @mesoplodon_ ! He shared his knowledge and expertise on the art of audio storytelling!

✨Ari Daniel is an independent science reporter who contributes regularly to National Public Radio (@npr) among other outlets. Ari has always been drawn to science and the natural world. As a graduate student, Ari trained gray seal pups for his Master’s degree in animal behavior at the University of St. Andrews, and helped tag wild Norwegian killer whales for his Ph.D. in biological oceanography at @mit and Woods Hole.
For more than a decade, as a science reporter and multimedia producer, Ari has interviewed a species he’s better equipped to understand – Homo sapiens.

🎤Over the years, Ari has reported across six continents on science topics ranging from astronomy to zooxanthellae. His radio pieces have aired on NPR, The World, @radiolab, Here & Now, and @livingonearth. In addition to his many accolades for journalism, Ari won the “Most Contagious Smile” award in the fifth grade.

🌟How to Write an Op-Ed with David George Haskell🌟

💻 We had our first Expert Presenter Workshop this fall with @davidgeorgehaskell! He shared his knowledge and recipe for how to write an op-ed!

✨David is a writer and a biologist living in Atlanta, Georgia. His books about forests, people, and the sensory richness of life have twice been selected as finalists for the @pulitzerprizes in Nonfiction. His latest book, Sounds Wild and Broken, was also a finalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award, winner of the @acousticalsocietyofamerica Science Communication Award, and listed by @nytimes as an “Editor’s Choice”.

📚 His previous books, The Forest Unseen and The Songs of Trees, are acclaimed for their integration of lyrical writing and rich attention to the living world. Among their honors include the National Academies’ Best Book Award, John Burroughs Medal, Iris Book Award, Reed Environmental Writing Award, and National Outdoor Book Award for Natural History Literature. He has also written essays and multimedia projects for @emergencemagazine, @nytimes , and other publications. Haskell is William R. Kenan Jr. Professor at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, a Fellow of the @linneansociety, and a Guggenheim Fellow.

The Hubbard Brook Research Foundation, the League of Conservation Voters, the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society at Dartmouth College, and Sustainable Futures Consulting will host a three-part public panel discussion featuring bi-partisan environmental decision-makers of the past, present, and future.

🌍We will hear from the scientists, lawmakers, and advocacy leaders who championed the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments; current Congressional Representatives who are working across the aisle to support our changing winter economies; and young environmental activists with a shared vision for a sustainable future.

💧 Mariely (@marielyvegag) is a PhD student at the North Carolina State University majoring in biology. Her research focus is to assess stream ecosystem responses to natural disturbances, particularly droughts and hurricanes in tropical montane streams. She uses freshwater macroinvertebrates as the model organisms to answer her research questions.

🇵🇷 She is a first generation college student who was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She strives to serve as a source of encouragement for those who feel the weight of being far from family and friends to further their careers.

🪨 Coralys (@coralys07) is a PhD student at the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras (@universityofpuertorico) majoring in biology and minoring in Ecology & Systematics. Her research project focuses on understanding the dynamics and properties of urban vegetation. She focusses on two potential drivers of vegetation community assembly and diversity: land cover and surface geology.

🇵🇷 She is a first generation latina, and wanted to create a podcast where many other folks in the Hispanic and STEM community could have the space to join and connect.

🌟YVoS Outreach Project: Maris Goodwin🌟

🔥 Maris is a Master’s student from the Alaska, Fairbanks (@uafairbanks) and is majoring in fisheries. She is using environmental DNA (eDNA) to provide a spatiotemporal analysis of fish, invertebrate, seabird, and mammal community composition in the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) and characterize the influence of environmental variables and spatiotemporal factors on species richness and diversity.

Ultimately, she seeks to unravel the complex relationships between environmental variables, glacial influence, and the composition of estuarine communities in high latitude coastal ecosystems.

✨What: FREE science communication training and real-world practice for science scholars!
✨Who: Graduate, undergraduate students and early-career scientists in environmental (or similar) fields are eligible to apply
No need to be a student to apply!
✨When: Series of eight Zoom workshops held on Thursdays, September 26th through November 21st, 6:00 - 7:30 pm ET
✨Where: Wherever you are, via Zoom!

The application process will close on September 6th.

This FREE program consists of a series of expert-led workshops, each designed to prepare and empower science scholars to share their knowledge, concerns, and hopes for the future with the wider world. We provide participants with a launch pad for public engagement, early in their scientific careers. Our workshop leaders are experts in public engagement with science, creative writing, storytelling, and science-to-policy outreach. Class size is limited to 20-25 participants; we ask that participants commit to all eight workshops and design and carry out at least one outreach activity, with support from a staff mentor.

✨Alumni Feature: Nina Chung✨

🌱 Nina is an environmental educator and naturalist passionate about celebrating lesser-known biodiversity. She shares wildlife encounters on her Instagram @evolutionina to inspire people to learn about and protect the natural world.

🧪A mid-Atlantic native, she has taught at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland (@smithsonianenvironment ) and at Children’s School of Science in Woods Hole, Massachusetts (@childrensschoolofscience ).

🪸She has had the opportunity to do international field work in Kenya, Cuba, and Costa Rica studying ants, coral reefs, and herpetology. She is currently the Museum Program Coordinator at the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University (@thefossilpark).

🎼 Fun fact: Also a lifelong musician, Nina has written a rap song about speciation and a parody musical about Alfred Russel Wallace, Darwin’s co-discoverer of evolution.

✨Alumni Feature: Nina Foster✨

📒 Nina (she/her) is a graduate of Harvard College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in integrative biology. She joined YVoS in Spring 2022 after deciding to pursue a career in science communication and enjoyed learning about the art of storytelling from NPR’s Ari Daniel. Nina applied what she learned from YVoS to a summer internship in forest communications at the World Wildlife Fund, a narrative science journalism workshop with Michael Pollan, her senior thesis on climate journalism, and the National Association of Science Writers David Perlman Virtual Mentoring Program.

🎓 After graduating in May 2023, she worked as a communications coordinator and executive assistant at the Smart Surfaces Coalition, a group of more than 40 organizations committed to creating cooler and healthier cities through the adoption of climate-resilient infrastructure. This summer, she will be working as a science communication assistant at Acadia National Park, and in the fall, she will return to D.C. as the Post-Baccalaureate Plant Humanities Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks.
